The Best Classic French Toast – This easy French toast recipe makes homemade fluffy french toast using a cinnamon batter and any type of bread you want.
What makes this an easy French toast recipe?
It can be made with common ingredients you probably already have on hand. ย This recipe does not require you to go out and get fancy bakery style bread. ย You could, but you don’t have to. ย You can use the plain sliced sandwich bread you keep in your pantry, and still end up with the best french toast ever.
What is the best bread for French Toast?
I tend to think it’s whatever bread you already have. ๐ That way, at the spur of the moment, you can whip up a delicious and simple breakfast recipe in minutes. ย Having said that, I’ve tried this recipe with several different types of bread, and they all worked out perfectly. ย Here are some ideas for French toast bread.
- White bread (sliced sandwich bread, or bakery bread)
- Whole wheat bread (sliced sandwich bread, or bakery bread)
- Brioche (soft, buttery, eggy bread)
- Challah (soft, eggy bread)
- Texas toast (thick sliced bread)
- Cinnamon Raisin Bread

How do you make French toast batter?
The batter for French toast is basically an egg custard. ย It’s a mixture of eggs and milk that are mixed together. ย I also like to add vanilla, cinnamon, and sugar to my custard to give the French toast fantastic flavor.
French Toast Ingredients:
This is everything you need to make this simple French toast recipe. ย It’s probably stuff that you’ve already got on hand. (note* The full printable recipe card is at the bottom of this post)
- Eggs
- Milk
- Sugar
- Vanilla
- Cinnamon
- Butter
- Bread
- Toppings: ย maple syrup, powdered sugar, fruit, etc.
How to make French Toast.
- Add eggs to a large bowl.
- Whisk until well scrambled. (Make sure they are very well scrambled so you don’t end up with streaks of egg on the French toast.)
- Add milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon.
- Whisk together.
- If your bowl isn’t large enough to fit a piece of bread, transfer the custard to a shallow dish.
- Quickly dip a slice of bread into the batter, coating both sides.
- Place the French toast in a buttered skillet.
- Cook until the bottom is golden brown (about 3 minutes).
- Flip the bread over.
- Cook until the other side is golden brown (about 2 minutes).
- Serve warm with your favorite toppings.
How to make sure you end up with fluffy French toast.
Don’t let the bread rest in the egg batter for too long. ย The bread should really only be in the egg mixture for about 2 seconds on each side to get completely coated. ย If the bread soaks up too much custard, it can become soggy. ย If the bread is lightly coated in the eggs, it stays fluffy.

Ingredients
- 3 large eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk -or your preferred milk/milk alternative
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter for cooking
- 6 slices of bread -any kind of bread will work
- For topping: powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries, etc.
Instructions
- Add the eggs to a large bowl. Whisk until well scrambled.*
- Add the milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. Whisk until well combined.
- If your mixing bowl isn't wide enough to fit a piece of bread, transfer the egg mixture to a shallow dish, such as a pie plate.
- Place a 12 inch skillet over medium-high heat for 2 minutes (a griddle would also work well for this). Then, reduce the heat to medium and add 1 tablespoon of butter.
- As the butter melts, use tongs to dip a piece of bread in the eggs to get it evenly coated in liquid and flip it over to coat both sides. Only let the bread soak in the eggs for about 2 seconds per side.** Let any excess liquid drip off of the bread, then place the bread in the skillet, fitting 3 pieces of bread in the skillet at a time.
- Cook until the bottom is golden brown, about 3 minutes. Use a spatula to flip the bread over and cook until the other side is golden brown, about 2 minutes.
- Repeat with the remaining butter and bread.
- Serve warm. Top with traditional french toast toppings like powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries, etc.

Great, easy recipe! I used oatmilk as a substitute along with Natureโs Own whole wheat bread, and it was delicious. My whole family scarfed it down! I threw all the ingredients into the magic bullet to make sure the egg was completely mixed inโI hate eggy French toast. We topped it with maple syrup AND powdered sugar because…why not?!?
This turned out delicious! I have made it twice now, and shared the recipe with friends. Thanks for all the tips since it had been a long time since I had made French toast and I was worried about it being eggy or soggy, but it was absolutely perfect. I used a griddle and regular sliced wheat bread. My daughter absolutely loved it. And I froze the leftovers and they turned out great. Thanks!
